Candy Cane Express

This post was originally published in November, 2014 and updated in October, 2018.

All aboard for delicious holiday cookies and steaming hot chocolate! The holidays are almost here, and it’s time to get out of the house and into the Christmas spirit. What better way to put a little jingle in your step than a ride on the Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad Candy Cane Express?

Santa is waiting for you, so hurry down to the station and tell him all your holiday wishes. The train is ablaze with lights and ready for you to take your seat. Seniors, veterans and children under 10 get discounted tickets, making the train ride a little more affordable as a family activity. This is a fun, whimsical journey down the shoreline that will engage little ones and provide entertainment for all ages.

It’s an hour-long ride, a bit shorter than the usual trek aboard the Scenic Railroad (which can last closer to two hours). And it’s not just about cookies, cocoa and chatting with Santa: grab a window seat and point out unique features of our region to the kids. The train can be a great learning opportunity. Check out wildlife—you can see migrating birds, whales (when the tracks overlook the ocean) and sometimes deer from the train windows. There are also plenty of great views of the beach, forests, pastures and rocky cliffs characteristic of the Tillamook Coast.

Make it part of a weekend trip to the beach. The Oregon Coast is a great destination in cooler months, as tourist activity slows down. Fewer people mean miles of sandy shore open for long walks and jogs and plenty of space at popular local restaurants. Have fun walking through the small towns at the Coast, enjoy the holiday lights, festive fir trees and cozy fireplaces as it starts to get chilly outside. Cap off the trip with this leisurely tour by train. Even if you’ve been on the Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad before, the Candy Cane Express tour is a unique experience. From the festive decor to the visit from Santa—not to mention the holiday cheer on and off the train at this time of year—it’s worth hitching a winter ride!

You can hop on on the Candy Cane Express in Garibaldi at 10am, 12pm or 2pm on select days, starting just after Thanksgiving and through the month of December. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the beautiful Tillamook Coast while visions of sugar plums and gumdrops dance in your head.
