A home-cooked ham steamed as I cut slices for a holiday potluck with friends. It was the first weekend in December and wonderfully cozy to spend the afternoon in the kitchen as the wind tousled the trees outside.

Our plates were decked out in delectables from the pastures and farmland of north Tillamook County. The picturesque slabs of honey glazed ham on our plates were compliments of Peace Crops honey and Nehalem River Ranch pork, dusted with a sprinkling of Italian parsley from Green Fork Farm, and served with a salad of mixed greens from Kingfisher Farm. Dessert pies followed as we settled into the evening with mugs of hot cocoa from Bennett Farm milk.

Part of the fun for this event was gathering the ingredients for the meal. The coastal farmer’s markets here are closed for the winter but you can still get locally grown goods in town, call one of these farms directly, or visit one of the farm stores.

Stop in at Nehalem Beehive for local honey, where you can also pause for a hot beverage. The Beehive also carries quality local meats from Lance’s Farm Vittles who raise chicken, lamb, pork and beef. Take a scenic drive out Hwy 53 to the Farm Store at North Fork 53 where you can find local meats from two different ranches, fish from Community Supported Fishery, and fresh produce, storage crops and preserves. Also on Hwy 53, the Meadow Harvest Farm Marketplace carries their grassfed beef and lamb, as well wool and fiber arts from their animals, and is open Sundays noon to 7pm.

If you’re in Manzanita the Little Apple and Mother Natures Natural Foods both carry products from these local farms as well.
