Leave No Trace: How to Care for the Tillamook Coast While You Explore

When you think of the Tillamook Coast, what comes to mind? Towering forests, wide sandy and/or rocky beaches, hidden coves, winding rivers, and of course, the incredible wildlife that call this place home. We’re lucky to live (and play) in a region that feels truly nature-based, and we want to keep it that way.

That’s where Leave No Trace comes in.

Leave No Trace isn’t just a set of rules — it’s a mindset. A simple promise to leave this place as good (or better) than you found it, so future generations can enjoy it too.

Stewardship is one of our core community values, and we aim to attract visitors who share that same care and respect for nature.

Check tide tables, trail conditions, and local rules before you head out. Planning ahead helps keep you safe and prevents damage to fragile ecosystems.

Stick to the trails and respect private property

Stay on established trails and paths to protect plants and avoid erosion. And remember — if you see a “private property” sign, respect it.

Trash your trash — and pick up after your pup

Pack out all your garbage, even food scraps. Dog waste is pollution too, so always bring bags and pack it out. Clean beaches and trails keep everyone (and wildlife) healthier and happier.

Rocks, shells, flowers, and driftwood all belong to the coast. Let photos be your souvenirs, and leave the natural treasures for everyone to enjoy.

Be careful with fire

Use only designated fire rings or pits, follow local fire restrictions, and fully extinguish your fire before leaving. Unattended or poorly managed fires can have devastating consequences.

Keep wildlife wild

Enjoy watching animals from a safe distance. Never feed them, and avoid approaching nests or young animals. We’re guests in their home.

Share the beach and water

Be considerate of others, from clammers and surfers to beach walkers and kayakers. Respect different uses and give people (and wildlife) space to enjoy the coast safely.

Why it matters

The Tillamook Coast is a place we love deeply — and we know you do, too. By practicing Leave No Trace, you help protect its magic for years to come.

So next time you visit, ask yourself: What can nature do for you? And just as important: What can you do for nature?
