Sea to Table Sustainable Fishing with West Fish Co.

west fish co store front danMany guests to the Tillamook Coast come from all over to experience the thrill of hooking the big one and reeling it in, but if you aren’t inclined to do the work yourself, where can you go to find some of the freshest fish our area has to offer? Look no further than West Fish Co., a small scale fishing operation and seafood market located in Pacific City. We caught up with Dan Hulburt, co-owner and fisher extraordinaire, to learn more about the history of West Fish Co. and the sustainability efforts surrounding his company.

A Life at Sea

Dan has lived nearly all of his life next to the water or on the water. A native to Pacific City, Dan has spent countless hours in his free time casting lines and dropping pots. About five years ago, his friend (and eventual business partner) Tyler Kuhn asked him to consider starting a company doing what they love – fishing and crabbing. West Fish Co. was born. Their focus has always been on sustainability and how they can provide the freshest catch to their customers with the least amount of environmental impact.

Sustainable Seafood System

Dan and Tyler always thought it odd that they lived in a town famous for its commercial and recreational fishing and crabbing, and yet there was nowhere locally to buy that fresh catch. They decided to create West Fish Co. with that in mind. They maintain a small operation which is very much aligned with their motto “keep it small, keep it all.” By doing the fishing themselves, and only selling it locally, typically the very same day, they have streamlined their process and are able to provide customers with the freshest fish available. They have also avoided excess waste and cost by following this model, and are able to support themselves doing what they love.

Everyday an Adventure

Dory boat fishing is hard work, but Dan is content with this way of life. He shared some stories from the sea, including near-disasters on the boat, like the time he almost sank it, or the time Tyler flipped his boat (fortunately close to shore). He also marveled at the marine creatures that typically only fishers are lucky enough to see – a variety of whales, and if you get 30 to 40 miles out, dolphins, who form large pods and gracefully play in the wake of the boat. When asked what keeps him coming back, Dan responded “it’s an adventure everyday. It makes you feel alive.”

Let’s See Some Seafood!

If you are ready to try out some of the freshest seafood the Oregon coast has to offer, then head on over to West Fish Co. in Pacific City. They are currently open everyday, from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. or until they run out. They typically scale back hours in the fall, but can also try to fill off-season orders as needed. Reach out to them to see! When asked what his favorite items were, Dan said there is nothing like some fresh-caught salmon or tuna. Catch you at West Fish Co.!
